Time-sensitive guide

PostgreSQL 14 reaches community end of life on 12 November 2026.

If PG14 is still in production, the immediate job is not panic—it is inventory, target-version choice, compatibility testing, workload baselining and a controlled validation plan.

Check your minor version first

Some PostgreSQL 14 minor versions reach end of standard support before the major version does. Per the AWS release calendars:

  • RDS for PostgreSQL 14.18 and 14.19: 31 October 2026
  • Aurora PostgreSQL 14.17: 30 November 2026; 14.18: 31 December 2026

If you are on one of these, you may need a minor-version upgrade before the major-version decision. Either way, test it like a change: baseline first, then compare after. What RDS does at a minor-version deadline, and how to check your instances.

What to do first

The short version is below. The full PostgreSQL 14 upgrade checklist has the queries, the blockers RDS and pg_upgrade check for, and a PDF copy. If you are on RDS or Aurora, see what Extended Support will cost from 1 March 2027.

  1. Inventory PG14 instances, extensions and client libraries.
  2. Choose a supported target version based on application constraints and support horizon.
  3. Capture representative query/workload baselines before the change.
  4. Test extensions and migrations in a realistic staging environment.
  5. Compare important plans and latency after upgrade.
  6. Define rollback criteria before the maintenance window.
